Casa Eva
An iconic Goan home built in 1741 reimagined as a creative research lab and artist residency. We developed an open framework design for the renovation of the ancestral property; incorporating commercial programmatic schemes while maintaining a focus on architectural preservation and storytelling. From this expression of home came our design, and journey into land rights, material use, labor equity and the agency of space.
The 8,000m² heritage home sits at the end of a laterite path, immersed in an ecosystem of coconut groves and yellow bamboo, hornbills and rare butterflies. Once a quiet fishing town on the Arabian Sea, the surrounding village of Colva survived five centuries of occupation to become a place of rich Indo-Portuguese architectural heritage, now grappling with the pressures of extractive tourism and development.
After scanning Casa Eva the 3D point cloud data was used to build an architectural model. Riley and Sherina took full advantage of the model by continuing our renovation design remotely, across continents amidst the pandemic. We teamed up with Ernest to restore the traditional terracotta tile roof. Through India's national lockdown and monsoon season, we designed, coordinated, built and installed a pre-cast bespoke concrete counter and sink unit.
Olio also worked with Woodpecker Studio to fabricate a custom teak wood cabinetry system.
